WHO CAN FILE AN RTI APPLICATION?

Any person who is a citizen of India can file an RTI application for the purpose of seeking any

information regarding the government’s operations/activities.

Can a company file an RTI application?

A

No, the RTI Act, 2005 empowers only the citizens of India to obtain information from
the public authorities. A company does not fall under the purview of ‘citizen’ and hence
is ineligible to seek information under the RTI Act, 2005.

What is the prescribed fee for filing an online RTI application?

A

The fee for filing RTI application is Rs.10. The payment can be made
through online banking, debit card or credit card.

Within what period does the applicant receive a reply?

A

The applicant has to wait for about 30 days for PIO to file a reply (except in the case of
life and liberty in which the reply has to be filed within 48 hours of the application).

Is RTI a fundamental right?

A

Yes, RTI is a fundamental right guaranteed under Article 19(1) of the Constitution of India.

Who is a PIO?

A

PIOs are officers designated by the public authorities in all administrative units or offices
to provide information to the citizens who request information under the Act. Any officer,
whose assistance has been sought by the PIO for the proper discharge of his or her duties,
shall render all their assistance and for the purpose of contraventions of the provisions of
this Act, such other officer shall be treated as a PIO.
