FSSAI Registration and License for Starting a Food Business

Introduction

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, requires all All Food Business Operators (FBOs) to register their food related businesses, ranging from manufacturing and labelling to servicing etc. Each FBO must either acquire a License or a Registration, depending upon several factors such as their annual turnover, economies of scale and the type of food business they engage with.

Types of Registrations

There are three types of registrations provided for by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India as per the current rules:

Registration: The basic FSSAI Registration is for food business operators (FBOs) which have small-sized businesses or start-ups with an annual turnover of less than Rs.12 Lakh.

State License: The State FSSAI License is for medium-sized FBOs with an annual turnover of more than Rs. 12 Lakhs or up to Rs.20 crores.

Central License: The Central FSSAI License is for large scale FBOs with an annual turnover of more than Rs.20 crores.

Documents Required

● Form A (for Basic Registration) or Form B (for State and Central License)

● Photo ID and address proof issued by Government authority

● Proof of possession of premises

● Authority letter

● The layout of the processing unit

● Form IX: Nomination of Persons by a Company along with Board Resolution

● Declaration form

● Import Export Code (for Central License)

● NOC issued by FSSAI (for Central License)

● Ministry of Commerce Certificate for 100% EOU (for Central License)
