WHAT IS MARRIAGE REGISTRATION?
A marriage which has already been solemnised can be registered either under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The Hindu Marriage Act is applicable in cases where both husband and wife are Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs or where they have converted into any of these religions. Where either of the husband or wife or both are not Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs the marriage is registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

ELIGIBILITY

As per the Hindu Marriage Act, if a wedding is to be registered, both spouses must be either Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh or Jain.

Male must be 21 and females should be at least 18 years old.

Neither should have a legal and living spouse while applying for the second marriage.

Both must give valid consent,
freely and without any fear,
external force or aggression.

Spouses must not be from any type of prohibited relationship unless the custom is permitted by law.
